ABS crown and ratchet headgear for 300 Series windows

Headgear wears out before most windows do. The sweatband soaks through, the ratchet slips, and the shield drifts down your forehead every time you lean over the lathe. This 301 crown and headgear replaces that whole assembly. The crown is injection molded ABS with a universal bracket pin pattern, so it takes several of our window types, and a twist knob ratchet sets the fit.

Detents in the pivot hold your window up when you are reading a drawing and down when you are cutting, so it does not creep. The sweatband washes, which matters on long summer shifts. Paired with a suitable high impact window, the assembly is marked to ANSI Z87+ and CSA Z94.3. Keep your safety glasses on under it.

A face shield goes over safety glasses or goggles, never instead of them. OSHA's guide says a shield alone does not stop an impact, and a pitted or scratched window is the cue to replace it.

What the safety sources say

OSHA Publication 3151: Personal Protective Equipment. Describes safety spectacles, goggles, welding shields and face shields, and says face shields protect against splashes and sprays but not adequately against impact, so worn with goggles or safety spectacles they give added protection. It also says hearing protector makers must print the NRR on the packaging and that glasses, facial hair or long hair can reduce the protective value of earmuffs. Read October 2, 2026.
OSHA, 29 CFR 1910.133: Eye and face protection. Employers must ensure appropriate eye or face protection against flying particles, molten metal, liquid chemicals, chemical gases or vapors and injurious light radiation, with side protection against flying objects, and filter lenses must carry a shade number suited to the work. Devices must meet ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2010, Z87.1-2003 or Z87.1-1989 (R-1998), and the table sets minimum shades such as 10 for gas metal arc welding at 60 to 160 A and 14 for carbon arc welding.
