A face shield is three parts, and you replace them one at a time
Every Sellstrom face shield is a crown, a window and a way to hold it on your head: ratchet headgear you tighten with a knob, pin-lock headgear set by holes, or an adapter that clips into the slots of a hard hat. The window wears out first. Grinding sparks pit it, solvents haze it, and a pitted window is the cue to swap it, not to throw away the headgear.
Windows are made for a series. A DP4 window fits a DP4 crown, a 380 window fits a 380 crown, and the 301 window follows the universal hole pattern many shields share. Clear is for grinding, chipping and splash. Shade 5 IR is for torch work: gas welding, brazing and cutting, never an electric arc. Anti-fog and Sta-Clear coated windows are for work where your breath or the heat of the job clouds the view.
OSHA's guide to protective equipment is clear that a face shield alone does not stop an impact. Wear it over safety glasses or goggles, and let the shield take the spray and the sparks.
| Window | Made for | Not for |
|---|---|---|
| Clear polycarbonate | Grinding, chipping, machining, splash | Any welding or cutting light |
| Clear acetate | Chemical splash in labs and plants | Heavy impact |
| Shade 3 or 5 IR | Torch brazing, gas welding, oxygen cutting | Electric arc welding |
| Shade 6 or 8 IR flip visor | Torch work with a clear window behind for grinding | Electric arc welding |
Tints from the OSHA shade table: torch brazing needs at least Shade 3, gas welding 4 to 6, oxygen cutting 3 to 5. See the welding shade guide.
