Glasses first, a shield over them
A grinder throws sparks forward and chips sideways, often at once. NIOSH found that most eye injuries at work come from small particles striking or scraping the eye, such as metal slivers and wood chips. Start with safety glasses with side protection or a direct-vent goggle, then put a clear face shield over them for the face and neck.
Clear polycarbonate windows are made for this work. A window pitted by sparks blurs the view, and a new window costs far less than a new shield. Grinding near a torch? A flip-up IR visor over a clear window covers both jobs.
