Read the plate thickness, then pick the shade

Gas work runs lighter than an arc. OSHA sets Shade 3 for torch brazing, 3 to 5 for oxygen cutting depending on plate thickness, and 4 to 6 for gas welding. A Shade 5 IR goggle or window covers most cutting and welding of medium plate, and a flip-up visor lets you switch between the flame and the grinder.

OSHA also asks for goggles or other suitable eye protection during all gas welding and oxygen cutting. Anything on this page is for the flame, not for an electric arc, where the minimum shade starts at 7.

Questions

Torch cutting and brazing: what people ask

Which Sellstrom shade do you need for oxygen cutting?

Shade 3 to 5 depending on plate thickness, by the OSHA table: 3 under 1 in, 4 from 1 to 6 in, 5 over 6 in. See the welding shade guide.

Can you use these Sellstrom shields for MIG welding?

No. They are for the flame. Stick, MIG and TIG start at Shade 7 or 8 and need a welding helmet.
