Welding shades
Minimum shades from the OSHA table in 29 CFR 1910.133. OSHA also says to start darker than you think you need, then go lighter until you can see the weld zone, never below the minimum. A Shade 5 IR face shield window belongs to gas welding, cutting and brazing, never to an electric arc.

Since 1923
Sellstrom was founded in 1923 and is based in Illinois. The range grew from face and eye protection into welding helmets and filter plates, goggles for splash and heat, emergency eyewash, ear protection and the KneePro knee pads.
What has not changed is the way you buy from us: by part number. A window is made for a crown, a cover plate for a helmet opening, a lens for a goggle body, so the part you replace fits the gear you already own.
More about the brand, and how to reach the Sellstrom catalog, is on the about page.
Before you order
Chips and dust call for glasses with side protection, a splash calls for goggles, and grinding or pouring calls for a face shield over either. Start from what can reach your eyes.
Match protection to the hazardYour process and the amps on the dial decide the shade. Stick at 60 to 160 A needs at least Shade 8, MIG from 60 A at least Shade 10.
Open the shade tableA replacement window has to fit the hole pattern of your crown. Look up the series of the shield you own (DP4, 380, 390, 301) and order the window made for it.
See windows by seriesFilter and cover plates come in 2 x 4-1/4 in and 4-1/2 x 5-1/4 in. Measure the window of your helmet before you order a plate for it.
See plates and coversIf you wear glasses, pick over-the-glass safety glasses or a goggle with room for frames, so neither pair is pushed out of place.

Face protection
A face shield stops splash and spray, not the chip that hits your eye. Wear it over glasses, then choose the window for the job.

Welding
Fixed plate or auto-darkening filter, lift front or fixed front: how to choose a welding helmet and the shade your process and current call for.

Chemical splash
Which goggle venting keeps liquid out, when a face shield goes over it, and the 15 minute, 10 second eyewash figures to plan around.

Hearing
What the Noise Reduction Rating on the box measures, why fit decides how much of it you get, and how OSHA's Appendix B uses it.
Questions
Every product page on this site has a button that opens that exact part, in the tint, shade or pack you picked, at our retail partner. That is where the price is confirmed and you check out.
Any of them, and you should. OSHA's guide to protective equipment says a face shield alone does not protect against impact, so the shield goes over safety glasses or goggles. Pick the series by the job: the DP4 for everyday grinding, the 380 or Advantage with a chin guard, the 390 with pin-lock or ratchet suspension. The eye and face protection guide has the details.
Match the series of the crown you already own: DP4 windows fit DP4 crowns, 380 windows fit 380 crowns, 390 windows fit 390 crowns, and the 301 window follows the universal hole pattern. The part number on the old window is the quickest way to the new one. See replacement windows by series.
It depends on the process and the current. The OSHA table asks for at least Shade 8 for stick welding at 60 to 160 A and Shade 10 for MIG from 60 A, and its note says to start darker and go lighter until you see the weld zone. The welding shade guide has the full table.
No. Shade 3 to 8 IR windows, visors and goggles are for torch work: brazing, gas welding and oxygen cutting. Electric arc welding starts at Shade 7 in the OSHA table and needs a welding helmet or hand shield.
NIOSH explains it: Z87 marks normal safety wear and Z87+ marks high impact. Each Sellstrom product page shows a standard only where that product's own data names it. Read more in the eye and face protection guide.
