Shade 5 IR flip window for torch work

Brazing a fitting or cutting plate with an oxy and acetylene torch throws off a bright, hot glare that a clear window lets straight through. This flip window is polycarbonate tinted to Shade 5 IR, and it hinges in front of the clear window on our 380 series face shields. You flip it down while the flame is lit and up again when you need true color to read a gauge or mark the next cut.

Shade 5 is a torch shade. It is right for gas welding, brazing, oxygen cutting and glare, and it is not dark enough for electric arc welding, which needs a welding helmet and filter. You still wear safety glasses under the shield. Assembled with a 380 series shield, the window is marked to ANSI Z87+ and CSA Z94.3.

Before you start

IR tinted windows, visors and lenses are for torch work: brazing, gas welding and oxygen cutting. They are not a filter for an electric arc, where the OSHA table starts at Shade 7.
