Diopter plates that bring the puddle into focus

Reading glasses do not fit under a welding helmet, and a blurry bead is a bead you cannot judge. A magnifier plate solves that by sitting behind the passive or auto darkening filter in your helmet, where it works much like a pair of readers. Each plate measures 4-1/4 by 2 inches, the standard filter size, and gives a clear, scratch resistant view of the joint.

Pick the strength you would choose in reading glasses. Glass plates come in 0.75, 1.25, 1.50, 1.75, 2.25, 2.50 and 3.00 diopters, and plastic plates in 1.50, 2.00 and 2.25. Glass resists scratching, while plastic is lighter in your helmet. Start low if you are unsure, since too strong a plate shortens your working distance. Every plate is marked to ANSI Z87.1.

Before you start

Pick the shade from your process and current with the OSHA table, start darker and go lighter until you see the weld zone, and replace cover plates once spatter clouds the view.
