Passive filter plates for a 2 by 4 1/4 opening

A passive filter plate does one job and needs no battery to do it. This polycarbonate plate measures 2 by 4-1/4 inches, the common size for fixed shade helmets and lift fronts, and it filters UV and IR and it takes heat, sparks and spatter. Being impact resistant, it can ride in a helmet that gets knocked against beams and benches.

Choose the shade for your process. Shade 6 IR is for torch work such as brazing, gas welding and oxygen cutting, and for glare, not for arc welding. Shade 9 IR and Shade 10 IR are darker plates for arc work, and your welding chart tells you which one your process and current call for. Keep a clear cover plate in front of the filter to take the spatter.

Before you start

Pick the shade from your process and current with the OSHA table, start darker and go lighter until you see the weld zone, and replace cover plates once spatter clouds the view.
